Welcome to Chapter 4 of Keen Company...

Your go-to blog series for getting to know the people, inspirations and stories behind some amazing brands! Under the microscope this week is the amazing Amanda Campeanu from Plush Content Co.

Amanda is an absolute powerhouse and I have loved following her journey since finding her Instagram over the past few months! She has just made the huge leap from working full time in the big corporate world, to working part time for Lorna Jane and part time on her business. This is something I know that so many people DREAM of doing and I am so excited to see where she goes from here!

I highly recommend following Amanda's Instagram account, she is so motivational, transparent and I absolutely love seeing her behind the scenes shots of her shoots! There are so many amazing pieces of advice in this interview so keep reading to learn a thing or two from the beautiful Amanda....

THE HUSTLE QUESTIONS:

Q: When people ask who are you and what you do… what do you tell them? Essentially… what is your elevator pitch?

A: I have ALWAYS struggled with this, mostly because my entire life has been living in the world of finance. Until now. What I would say is this: I’m a brand photographer and Instagram strategist helping businesses tell their brand’s story and build an authentic and genuine community.

Q: Often a massive struggle for new businesses… how the heck did you come up with your business name?

A: It literally took me like a week to settle on my business name. My boyfriend and I were throwing words at a whiteboard one night that I thought encapsulated my brand. Words like tea, coffee, mint, flowers, pink, luxe etc. I knew I wanted the word ‘content’ in there and initially was going to call it ‘Luxe Content’, but there were quite a few people out there using Luxe so I wanted a word that meant luxe...so Plush Content Co came about!

Q: Though I am sure there will be many, what would you class as your biggest career/business highlight to date?

A: There’s definitely nothing like booking your first client, but 100% quitting full-time work to focus on my business part time has been the highlight so far! I’m literally waking up every morning and thinking to myself ‘what is life?!’

Q: What is your absolute favourite part about what you do for living?

A: Number one would be the AMAZING people I get to connect with. I’ve actually been able to make friends in my local area by connecting on Instagram. That and I just freaking love styling a shoot and coming up with the final product!

Q: Everyone has to learn things the hard way sometimes, what has been your biggest lesson learnt in your career/business?

A: Always get paid up front. I didn’t really learn this in my business but more so when I used to work in accounts payable and receivable. I’d literally be chasing people every single day for money.

There’s been a couple of times where I’ve let this slide in my own business and I always have to send payment reminders which I hate doing. So I always explain to my clients the payment up front secures your booking with me.

I’m also scared of starting work and people changing their minds, so I never start anything until payment has been made so I never waste my time.

Don’t wait for it to be perfect and just freaking start!

Q: What is your best piece of advice you like to give other entrepreneurs?

A: Don’t wait for it to be perfect and just freaking start! My website never would have launched if I waited for it to be perfect. And perfectionism looks different to everyone else, so something I thought wasn’t perfect, would in fact look perfect to another person.

Q: Cash flow is normally extremely tight when you start a new business, but what would be your non negotiable to skimp out on dollar wise when you first start out?

A: In all honesty I actually didn't and still don’t have many expenses. I bought my camera before I wanted to start a business so I didn’t buy it purely for that. I think my website is the most expensive thing I pay for. In all honesty (and I’m legit not trying to sell myself here), I think a non-negotiable is investing in good quality content both visual and written.

While I don’t need to invest in that part for my own business I think if you REALLY want to give this business thing a go, you need to have high quality content. I think it shows that you’re serious about what you’re doing and your passion will shine through.

Q: Who are your mentors and/or biggest sources of inspiration?

A: My brother was actually the person who inspired me to start my own business. He ran his own business for 7 years. I actually worked for his company and when I saw him managing it I was like ‘I want to be that person’. Entrepreneurship runs through my family so I also feel a pull towards it.

In terms of industry inspiration, Jasmine Star, Jenna Kutcher, Tim Ferriss and Tai Lopez are my BIGGEST sources of inspiration!

Q: Your biggest goal for the next five years?

A: This is a hard one as I find it very hard to plan my life that far in advance. I think for me generating passive income streams would be one of my biggest goals! I’m not solely motivated by money but I would like to live a life where I don’t need to look at a price tag. While I LOVE doing everything in my business and working with my clients, in 5 years, I definitely see a massive shift coming that will see me go beyond what I’m offering. I’m already in those planning stages :)

I guess the goal would be to make money while I sleep. Trading your time for money won’t ever make you wealthy.
